Learning and validation

Certifications

Practical guidance for choosing, preparing for and getting value from data and cloud certifications.

01

Why certifications matter

Certification can provide a structured path, validate core knowledge, create career visibility, and give you confidence on a new platform. It is especially useful when changing roles or working where vendor credentials matter. Systematic preparation also exposes topics that day-to-day work may let you skip.

Certification validates knowledge.
Projects and experience demonstrate application.

02

What can a certification actually do for you?

Where it helps

  • Proves structured knowledge and creates a learning goal
  • Can help with recruiter filtering and internal promotion conversations
  • Supports consulting or partner credibility
  • Makes it easier to demonstrate breadth across a technology stack

What it cannot prove

  • Production judgment or debugging ability
  • Architecture tradeoff decisions
  • Communication and collaboration
  • Ability to operate systems under pressure

No certification guarantees a job, promotion, salary increase, or Microsoft MVP status.

03

When they are useful—and when they are not enough

Most useful

When learning a platform, moving into data engineering, formalizing existing knowledge, preparing for architecture responsibility, showing Microsoft-stack breadth, or working in an organization that values partner credentials.

Combine them with

Projects, troubleshooting, architecture decisions, production operations, Git and CI/CD, monitoring, performance work, and clear technical communication.
